I met John D. Hughes when I worked at River Oaks Bank & Trust Company as CFO from 1978 to 1992. John handled legal work for ROBT as well as for most of Chairman James E. Lyon's real estate transactions. John was a great attorney and an even better friend. I will never forget that he arranged for his law firm, Hughes, Watters & Askanase, to hire our daughter, Katherine Brewer, when she graduated from Baylor University in May, 2000 with a BBA degree in Marketing and Human Resource Management.
John was someone you could always count on. He was smart, trustworthy and always on top of every issue. I will miss him.

It was an honor to work with John from 2001 until his retirement from HWA. Even then, we continued to play golf together from time to time. I enjoyed his company. He was a kind and thoughtful man, careful in what he said and slow to anger. I remember making a mistake once that made his client very mad at him. I know John was really mad at me, too, but he just sat me down for a gentle rebuke. He taught me a valuable lesson about dealing with other people - quiet "disappointment" can be just as effective as yelling and screaming. I have applied that lesson many times myself. Ironically, John came to mind just last week, a few days before he died. Maybe that was him saying goodbye on the way to heaven, where I'm sure he will be welcomed. I will miss him.

John was a good friend and great attorney. I knew John for fifty-five years. I was proud to be invited to his retirement party. He extricated me from a bad deal I had made and actually got me a job with one of his clients. I will be eternally grateful. Bill Stewart
