Obituary of Sondra Towns Tappmeyer

Sondra Tappmeyer peacefully passed away at her home on December 18, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents (Tom and Charlie Atomanczyk), brother (Lloyd Towns), and first husband (James “Jim” Underwood).

Sondra was born in Bremond, Texas (May 16, 1940). At an early age, she moved to Mart, Texas where she graduated from the 8-time state football champion, Mart High School. After moving to Houston, she worked for Southwest Bell Telephone Company and Shell Oil Company. In 1961, she married Jim Underwood and raised her family in Southwest Houston. In 2005, she married Ron (Tapp) Tappmeyer. She and Tapp built a wonderful life together for nearly 20 years.

Sondra was an avid tennis player. She became President of the Houston Ladies Tennis Association in the 80’s. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, which gave her the opportunity to appear on Good Morning Houston. She made beautiful vests and quilts for her family. She loved playing bridge and watching sports, namely baseball and football. She was a huge fan of the Astros, Texans, and the University of Texas. She loved to entertain, and her Christmas parties which were elegant and fun. She had a close circle of friends, some since elementary school, that made her extremely proud and happy.

She is survived by her husband Ronald Tappmeyer and her family including children, Kent (Ruth), Jana, and Clay (Kristi); grandchildren Jarrod (Emily), Kaitlyn, Will, Amelia, and Bode; great grandsons, Emmet and Arthur; nieces, Donna , and Pam, and nephew, Jerry.

A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, 4 January 2024 at Sugar Land Methodist Church, 431 Eldridge Road in Sugar Land, Texas.
