Msg. Ret. Wilberta Thornton of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away after living a long fulfilled life. Her sunrise was March 18, 1935, and sunset on August 28, 2016 in Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Charles Baker, 10th Cavalry, US Army, and Virginia Brown-Baker, housewife; sisters, Leila May Baker-McMillon and Dorothy Lyons; and brother, Charles Baker.
Ms. Thornton is survived by three daughters, Nina Thornton Cox of Columbus, Ohio, Cynthia Thornton of Southfield, Michigan, Marie Thornton of Richmond, Texas, and one son, Ricky Thornton, also of Southfield, Michigan. She is also survived by her sister, Beatrice Barnes; brother, Harold Baker; niece, Marsha Peterson of Houston; and grand-niece, Regina Peterson of Katy, Texas.
Ms. Thornton served twenty years in the US Army and was stationed in Alabama, Washington DC, California, Indiana, Japan and Germany. Following her retirement she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from American Technological University.
She worked for The Texas Department of Human Services as Program Director until she chose to retire due to her medical condition(s).
A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
