Dear Connie, Allan T., Kristine-&-Raymond, Sharon-&-Ryan , Family, Friends of Coach Allan:
I was saddened to learn of the death of Allan on May 15 2017. Please accept my deepest sympathy at your loss. It is sad to lose a loved one in death at any age, but hopefully at 86 years of age, and after such marvelous experiences in life, it can be said of Allan what was said of Isaac at Genesis 25:39 "he died old and satisfied with days."
May I share some verses from the Bible that bring continuing comfort when we suffer the loss of a loved one?
First, it was never our Creator's purpose that anyone should die, ever! When He put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they had the prospect of endless life, in ageless bodies, in perfect health, on a perfect Earth (Genesis 1:28). Adam and Eve could have passed that life on to us, but they sinned and lost everything for themselves ... and us. (Romans 5:12)
Next, it comforted me and softened my feelings toward our Creator, Jehovah God, to learn that it is Satan who causes imperfection, aging, sicknesses like cancer, and death -- not God (Hebrews 2:14).
Finally, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, are our guarantees that this Earth will yet be a peaceful, global paradise and that Allan will be resurrected to enjoy it. Remember Jesus' words at John 5:28-29a and John 11:25: "I am the resurrection and the life," and "all those in the memorial tombs ... will be resurrected." Until then Allan, Rest In Peace.
May you have comfort and peace from these promises until the day when you can be reunited with a young (Job 33:25) and healthy (Isaiah 33:24) Allan.
With deepest sympathy and genuine respect,
Harolyne Grant

Hi Connie,
I had hoped to meet with Al possibly at Memorial Park on my next trip to Houston but I am immensely sorry for your loss. I enjoyed his book "Olympus and Beyond" and was a great inspiration to me and will continue running and biking as long as I have life left in me. Please give my sympathies to Al's children and extended family and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Al was a great man even though I had not the privilege of meeting him in person. He was most gracious in autographing his book with a few words of some of the people we knew in common.
The very best to you in the future and God Bless you and your family! I know his spirit will continue to live in the Houston Running Community and to all those who knew and loved him.

This is a note's from Scott B. Clarke, Houston Cougar 1965-69; cross country, indoor/outdoor track 4 year letterman.
What a privilege it was to be brieflycoached by Al Lawrence. More importantly, what a privilege it was to just know Al. He had to be one of the greatest runners of all time as well as one of the greatest coaches to boot.
We (Mike Wilson, Bob Gardiner, Terry Sweeney, and myself), with an assist from Ben Harvey tried to surprise Al after being away for a mere 42 years. Al remembered each one of us, our team nicknames that we hadn't heard in 42 years, and he threw in at least one funny story about each one of us. I quess the surprise was on us.
As we all know Al was a great runner, a wonderful caoch, and a super person. It brings me a lot of pride to say I was coached by one of the best. As with most runners, I wish I had run better for Al.
My best to Connie and all of the cougar family in this very difficult time.

Dear Connie - Knowing Al for more than 30 years was a great pleasure in my life. His sense of humor and his delivery was something unique to him and endearing. Your were the second wind in his life - with you he had a fulfilled life. Al was a very fortunate and deserving man. Warm wishes, Connie - George (or as Al always addressed me, Georgie)

Dear Connie, Sharon, Kristine, and Little Al - you all know how much EVERYONE loves your husband, and dad! WE love him too. I know we all have our stories about how Al has affected our lives. But I know if it wasn't for meeting him when I did, I probably wouldn't be here now either. He literally saved my life. Running - and finding a reason to live is what he gave me. I think we are put in one's life for a reason...and Jackie Delaney introduced us - and she knew it would be a perfect fit. Thanks to Al, I accomplished more in my life than I ever imagined...and knowing I could run a marathon gave me a new vision on life. I can do anything now. If I want to! My heart is broken, but I know he is already telling God to run a 440 in under a minute! LOL! My love to you all - this family - so beautiful. My real sadness is not being able to see him before he left us!
