To The Deffner Family - I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of your loved one. As one of Joey's 4th grade teachers at St. Edward the Confessor School in Metairie, LA, I recall him as a sweet, obedient little boy and good student. In reading about all his accomplishments, I feel very proud of him, but very saddened in his passing at such a young age. May God bless him with eternal happiness.

I can’t even begin to say how much you will be missed. You were loved by so many…family, friends, your kids. You were always the wise one. You were always the peacemaker. You were so very humble for someone who had so many accomplishments and so many adventures. You were such a generous and giving person. My childhood memories all have you in them…bbqs at the park, swimming at the Y, building castles in Cheryl’s room, the beach, watching game shows at Maw Maw & Paw Paw’s house for hours at a time and drinking coffee on her kitchen floor til we got sick when we were 5 or 6 years old. We got older and did our own things but every time we were together for holidays or when we ran into each other on a night out, it was like we hadn’t been apart for a minute. You were one in a million Joey and there will never be another like you. My heart is broken but I take comfort in the fact that you’re with Maw Maw & Paw Paw now and you are watching over all of us and protecting us. I will love you and miss you until we are together again.

I am very sorry I am nowhere near you as I wish to be at the funeral. Joe's joie de vivre and optimism carried him so far in this life. While we had been disconnected for so long, when we reconnected, I was glad to once again call him friend. This comes as such a shock as we'd planned to meet again soon. It's too early to say goodbye, but I'm glad to have had Joe be a part of my life.

Like a true Southern man, Joe has one of the biggest hearts and a good-natured attitude which can brighten up any room with his humor, laughter, and one of a kind stories. I am reminded of his contagious smile during his visits to our NYC office and video conference calls. He will be truly missed.
May he R.I.P.

What a Great American Hero. Joe was an inspiration to Scouts and Scouters, Parents and Family. We will miss him and Pray for his Family but know that he left a lasting mark and impressions n ALL of us. Joe certainly left us to early but he also left a piece of himself with each of us. I know I would not have been the involved Scout parent I was if not for Joe;s word and wisdom throughout the journey. Also, I know Sean attributes his Eagle Rank to inspiration he regularly got form Joe when at times the road seemed unclear. Mt fiend, we Thank You and will miss you but do look forward to meeting again in Heaven. Until then keep an eye on us and push us in that oh so subtle way when times seems tough and we have a bit more to go to hit the peak.
Farewell for now.

Joe, I am immensely saddened by the loss of you, a good boss and mentor, an ultimate Finance professional, a friend who was always willing and ready to offer help, and most importantly, a person who effected far-reaching impact on my career and personal life.
I first met you in 1999 when you interviewed me for the Analyst & Associate program at Enron's Super Saturday event. You were an extremely successful young executive, Managing Director at Enron North America's Finance group. Out of all interviewers, you were outstandingly sharp but nice and I felt I connected especially well with you. When I joined Enron and was assigned by HR to a business group that was soon to be eliminated (later I came to know that HR applied a "reverse order" based on the interview results to give higher-ranked new-hires lower priorities in first rotation assignments), I was desperate for help, and came up with just enough courage to give you a call out of the blue. To my surprise, you invited me to go to your office right away, and just sat there and made several phone calls for me, until you found an ideal rotation for me at ENA's Generation Investments group. After doing a good job in my first rotation, I got the opportunity to work in your group, a highly esteemed business unit at Enron and a hotly sought-after opportunity for MBAs, for my second rotation. I had the pleasure and honor of working with you and being mentored by you for 8 months, always impressed by your intelligence and effectiveness, and most importantly, your kindness, fairness and your meritocracy-based respect for talents. When the Enron bankruptcy happened, as a Chinese citizen without a green card back then, I would have had to leave the United States if I were to lose my job. As the head of the group, you decided to retain me so that I didn't lose my visa status, until I received another job offer. I have always been extremely grateful for you - you had no other reason to favor me but your warm-heartedness, your appreciation for talent and good work ethic, and your willingness to help someone in need.
After many years, when I returned to Houston in 2009, I had a catch-up lunch with you and looking back, I am very happy that I told you face-to-face about the tremendous benefit you had brought to my career and personal life. I clearly remember your smile then - somewhat surprised, bashful and uneasy, and so unassuming as always. That smile will live in my mind for ever.
The last time I met you was more than a year ago, when you, Lisa and I had lunch at the Morton's restaurant in downtown. I gave the two of you a flower basket hand-made from beads by my mother. Oh Joe, how I wish we could re-live that relaxed and happy moment, just one more time!
As a person born and raised in the atheist China, I am not even familiar with the Christian vocabulary to pay tribute to you. But I wish you could hear these words in heaven. Your life was as heavy as a mountain to my world, and your leaving has left a big void in my heart that I don't think could ever be filled. Rest in peace Joe, you are and will always be painfully missed!

Please accept my condolences on Joe's passing. I knew Joe professionally, and he was well-known in the industry for being both intelligent and a "good guy". While I did not know Joe as long as many of his friends, soon after we met several years ago while working on a mutual client, we learned we had much in common. Joe and I were both born and raised in New Orleans and went to the same high school, which in New Orleans, guarantees a lasting friendship, regardless of the years between us. I made it my responsibility to find every opportunity to get him and Lisa back to his hometown as often as possible, for business or pleasure. Late last year I helped arrange for him to become a member of the Knights of Babylon, a great Mardi Gras krewe, which further solidified his re-connection to NOLA and our friendship. In just the last two weeks we were making plans for him and Lisa to come to our Krewe’s annual Christmas party.
Joe was a prince of a guy. Always there for his clients, friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Through his kindness and selflessness, Joe made the world around him a much better place. He was a brilliant man who combined a deep knowledge of finance with highly informed opinions on which dive bars had the best 50-cent oyster happy hours. In my years of working with him, no matter how stressful the situation or circumstances, he was always the peacemaker in the room, with an unflappable temperament and a joke to remind everyone that in the end, it all came down to people.
He was a singularly wonderful human being, and I am so grateful for having known him.

I have so many fond memories of working for Joe during our Enron days. He could easily explain very complicated financial structures and was always ready to share his notes from a previous deal. He also was full of witty comments, especially when you least expected them. As a boss, we could always count on him to know the best dives. Some of my favorites include Lankford Grocery and Market for awesome burgers, Kenneally's for beer and pizza, and the Treebeard's in Christ Church Cathedral. You are missed Joe. Rest in peace.
