Jeffrey Spangler, Student DSL 1978 - York, PA posted a condolence

"Every Evidence class with Dean Wilks guaranteed a couple of hearty laughs and a lot of learning. He was a lawyer's lawyer and a Dean's Dean. American and international laws are more just today from his contributions. It's traditional in law school after the last day of class that the students give a round of applause to the Professor. It's ringing worldwide for Dean Wilks with a standing ovation. Goodbye, Sir."

"Dean Wilks was a true gentlemen, accomplished professor and extraordinary mentor. His humor, compassion and sincere desire to see his students succeed, made him the finest educator I've known in my over 20 years in academia. When I encountered a problem during my first year of law school, I was certain my legal career was over before it started. Dean Wilks, however, came up with an innovative solution that allowed me to balance a job and school which made it possible for me to continue my studies. He was a great man who will be dearly missed by many, many grateful students."

"I was also one of Dean Wilks' students at Dickinson Law and he was a favorite of mine. In a discipline that is so often tedious and humorless, Dean Wilks brought the human touch and a good bit of humor. His Evidence lessons were memorable. He used real examples and often fanciful ones that stayed with you. I'll never forget his example of a "Dying Declaration" that featured Mary's last words to her Little Lamb: "Little Lamb, I'm going to die now...." Who could forget that! It came to me during the bar exam and brought a smile to my face. He earned our respect and admiration for his intellect, his wit and his humanity. Thank you, Dean, and rest in peace."

"Dean Wilks taught the class in Evidence to me and my classmates (Class of 1976) at The Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, PA. But, by his personal examples of clear thought, personal engagement, active listening, spontaneous humor, continuous humility, and demonstrable respect, he taught me much more. I suspect that I am not alone in recognizing his profound influence upon law students, such as me. I think of him fondly after all these years. For our 1976 Class reunion in 2011, I invited him to attend in Carlisle. His reply email was enthusiastic, but he excused himself due to other law school related commitments in Texas. Even in that brief exchange, he demonstrated the energy and optimism that flowed through him still. Now, upon his passing, I honor his memory. I offer sympathy to his family. I thank G-D that I encountered him when I did. And I ask G-D to care for him lovingly."

"I was a student at the Dickinson School of Law from September 1980, through June, 1983, and got to know Dean Wilks as a teacher, a mentor and a friend. Because I also worked on the school's maintenance crew, I spent my winter and summer breaks working around the school and in the summer time we would go out to his house on the Conodoguinet Creek and "borrow" his canoe and rope swing for an afternoon of entertainment. I have had a fairly successful career practicing law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and without a doubt I owe a great deal of gratitude to Dean Wilks and others like him at Dickinson. I will always have fond memories of the time that I spent in his company."

"We can address Bill Wilks only a a colleague of one and teacher of the other at The Dickinson school of Law. In a world in which so few listen as opposed to hear, Bill was a fine listener. He was the most effective Law Dean of many we saw in action. Bill was not afraid to get his hands dirty. If a task he assigned needed an extra hand to achieve fruition, there he was but as an aid rather than an arm waver. Dickinson owed him much. Ameican Legal Education owes him much."
