Obituary of Frances Sarah Spiker

Please share a memory of Frances to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Frances Sarah Spiker, born September 21, 1933 in Stephenville, Texas to Luther Cleveland and Frances Martha Shuffield, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, in Katy, Texas.

With the faith of a child, Fran followed her children into the Orthodox Christian Church.  She was Chrismated on Pascha 2012.  She regularly attended all church services at her parish, Saint Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church. Yet, with her belief that you never stop learning, she even attended catechism classes at her parish this year. Every morning she woke and prayed her prayer rule. She always brought home the prayer bulletin and if you asked her to pray for you, you can be assured she prayed for you.

Fran never withheld her love.  She gave all freely to her family.  Home was where Mom was.  She loved to cook and more often than not, a mouthwatering aroma would greet you at the door.

Fran never lost her innocent outlook on life to the great amusement of her friends and family.  She was always ready to laugh even though she never got the punchline.  She was gifted with a compassionate heart and was quick to put herself last.  These traits made her a nurse extraordinaire.

She always set an early alarm with plenty of time to put herself together for work.  Her appearance and winsome smile made her a patient favorite.  They would request her for the worst jobs, and she served with humor and kindness.  Because of her servant spirit, she was awarded Nurse of the Year in Clear Lake and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Fran was never an outdoor girl.  She didn’t like the bugs, humidity, heat, cold and especially that outdoor smell tracked back into the house.  But, that all changed when she discovered Eastern Cottontail rabbits in the back garden and realized they like grapes.  She would buy grapes specifically for them.  She even sampled them at the store to make sure they were sweet enough.  In the afternoon you would find her on the porch calling, “Here bunny bunny, I have grapes.”

Fran is survived by her husband I. K. “Ike” Spiker, her daughters Laura and Lisa Spiker, her son Ike Spiker, daughter-in-law Elian Spiker, grandson Lukas Spiker, and her brother Luther C. Shuffield.
