My condolences to the family of Phillip Durham. I have had the honor and pleasure of performing with Phillip on several occasions at the Memorial Drive Christian Church, my playing one note at a time on the clarinet while he played multiple notes on the piano. The music, the coordination, and the companionship will always be a part of my memory.

Phillip was my mom's first cousin. Growing up, we would often visit his parents at their home in Pasadena and I remember Phillip would play the piano for us and we would all sing. After my dad died, my mom moved to Friendswood and one Christmas my sister and I flew in and we all went to Phillip's church and sang Christmas carols together. It was a very special time and I greatly appreciated him including us. May our memories give us solace.

I thought about what I should write here. There's so much that can be said, about how much he meant to me, what a kind sensitive soul he was, how he touched the lifes of other people, but instead, I'm going to tell a short story.
I'm not sure of the year, maybe 1985? Phillip had bought a new house on Wafer and to show it off to everyone, had invited the family over for Christmas Eve. We were going to sit around the fireplace, drinking hot chocolate and singing Christmas songs. Only, when the day arrived, the weather temperature shot up and it was hot. Phillip, still determined for the winter experience at his house, cranked the A/C full blast. The fire was lit and we gathered around, in our oh so Christmasy shorts and t-shirts, with iced tea in hands. As the temperature indoors rose, so did everyone's temper. Sweating profusely while being directed to sing obscure Christmas Carols isn't high on most people's short list of fun times. A Norman Rockwell Painting it was not. Still, it left an impression on me. I quite enjoyed the roaring fire.
I hope other people have Phillip stories to tell and will feel free to share them.

Phillip danced to the beat of his own crescendoed melodic rhapsody. Larger than life with a presence and personality to match. He had a quest for beauty, harmony and all that is grand. A living breathing musical note that he shared with those fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. Blessed with the ability to find the good and joy in everything and everyone he met. A burst of light and colors enough to fill a mosaicked rainbow of life. His music and spirit will live on in those he knew and loved. Rest in everlasting peace my friend you will be missed and always remembered for the sound of music you brought and shared with us. Love you Phillip!
To you with love,
Marty

Through the years we did so many things together. He lived in Trinidad for 3 years and then came back to become the organist of Alvin Christian Church. We all loved you but on this last trip, I am sorry, but you travel alone. One day we will meet again dear brother.

Phillip, my brother, always travelled together. We went to Acapulco for two weeks for years and years. He went with us to go to New Orleans King Tut exhibition & World's Fair. Hey loved traveling. He spent one month in college traveling. He was my best friend as well as my brother. I shall truly miss his gentle loving spirit. Goodbye Phillip. I love you.
