Elvira Castañeda de Casamayor, born October 9, 1932, in Cienaga, Colombia, to Mariano Castañeda and Juanita Miranda, died on March 24, 2020 in Houston, Texas. Elvira was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings (five brothers and two sisters). Elvira is survived by her husband of 60 years, Joaquin Eduardo Casamayor Sr., children, Marie Casamayor-Harvey, Greg Casamayor, Joaquin Casamayor Jr., Carmen Casamayor-Ryan, sons-in-law Robert Harvey and Joseph Ryan, and daughter-in-law, Emilly Serapiao, her granddaughters, Maura and Ciara Ryan and Maria Beatriz Casamayor, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, and an extended family of individuals to whom she gave temporary lodging throughout the years as students and refugees. Elvira was a preschool and first grade teacher for numerous years and enjoyed travelling far and wide with her husband. During their travels, they visited museums, opera houses, concert halls, historical landmarks and made several pilgrimages. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date, when gathering is once again permissible. The family kindly requests charitable donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, in lieu of flowers. A special gratitude goes out to her at-home caregivers and the medical personnel of UTMB Hospital in Webster, Texas, and The Medical Resort at Bay Area in Pasadena, Texas.
