George Coble

Obituary of George Herren Coble

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George Herren Coble was born on November 27, 1951 in Houston, Texas to Jack and Betty Coble; he died at home on June 17, 2021 after a long battle with cancer.  George grew up in Bellaire, Texas, and spent summers fishing with his family at Caney Creek.  After graduating from Bellaire High School, he attended Texas Tech University where he received a BBA in Accounting.  George began his career as a CPA working for Touche Ross in Houston and Austin, and then for Tracor/BAE Systems for 30 years, and finally for the City of Austin Fleet Services.  He was active in various professional organizations during his career and made lifelong friends at all of his places of work.

Although he enjoyed his chosen profession, his real passion was his family.  He met his wife of 41 years, Theresa Eilers, at Texas Tech University in 1972.  After getting married in 1979, they started their life together with three adventurous months traveling across Southern Europe and the Middle East.  They settled in Austin, Texas, to raise their family.  George found the greatest joy in spending time with his children, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Jack, and later spending time with his grandchildren.

George’s hobbies included cooking (he was the repository of knowledge in the family for making bread, pickles, jelly, and preserves), fishing, and especially gardening.  He worked two community gardens in Austin and maintained a volunteer plot in Mayfield Park.  His love of gardening led him to get his Master Gardener certification in his retirement.

Throughout his life, George consistently gave his time to others.  He started out as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters immediately after college, and continued his volunteer work throughout his life, driving for Meals on Wheels, mentoring youth in Austin public schools, and participating in gardening programs at elementary schools.

George is survived by his wife, Theresa Eilers, his three children and their spouses, Elizabeth (Dan Worrall), Sarah (Mason Colgin), and Jack (Beth), his five grandchildren (Teddy, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret, Claire, and George), his sisters Peggy Donnell and Pat Wright, brother Boyd Coble, sister-in-law Janell Eilers (Andy Frankel), and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and coworkers.

George was known for his easy-going disposition, selflessness, and kindness to others and he nurtured those qualities in the ones he loved.  There are not words to describe how much he will be missed.

George’s family and friends will gather at the Houston Arboretum, 120 West Loop North, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 to visit together and honor George’s memory.  In lieu of flowers, and if you so choose, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels or a youth mentoring organization of your choice.

A memorial for George Coble will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Houston Arboretum,
