HODOCK, John Edward – Son, brother, uncle, and husband, John Edward Hodock, 29, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Houston, TX ending a long and arduous struggle with drug addiction.

Born August 14, 1992, in Albuquerque, NM to parents Joseph and Maureen, John was the youngest of five siblings and, following family tradition, attended Saint Pius X High School. In early childhood, he developed an interest in challenging games and a knack for solving complex puzzles – a combination that led to mastery of his favorite pastime, Magic: The Gathering. Playing MTG, John won several competitions, including a state title, and eventually met the other love of his life, Cat.

Curious by nature, John was a life-long learner who embraced any opportunity to further his knowledge. A voracious reader, he favored classic novels and philosophy, but would often spend hours submersed in obscure topics, even if only to prevail in an argument. John was no stranger to spirited debate. In addition to a penchant for reading, John wrote – he filled journals with lists, musings, notes, and sometimes, verse. Through his writing, we realize the strife of an addict, with entry after entry revealing the emotional pain and physical suffering John battled in this horrific opioid epidemic, a war that has destroyed so many lives leaving families forever changed.

Never one for the limelight, John shied away from taking photographs and public gatherings; however, he was always there for those who mattered and he truly appreciated the people who cared for him. If John could share a final piece of advice, he would echo the sentiment of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in that, “the only currency…is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.” Rest easy John, you are finally free.

Preceded in death by his father, John is survived by his wife, Catherine of Houston, TX; mother Maureen, and brothers Michael and Stephen, all of Albuquerque, NM; sister Katharine (husband, Jonathan) of Jersey City, NJ; and sister Analiese (husband, Robert), nephews Robert and Jude, and niece Quinn, all of Kokomo, IN. He will also be sadly missed by his New Mexico godparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, along with many friends from Albuquerque to Houston, including his former roommates James and Samantha of Houston, TX.

Cremation was by Joseph J. Earthman Generations funeral home in Houston, TX. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Albuquerque, NM. Interment of John’s ashes will follow in a private service at Rosario Cemetery, adjacent to the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM, where his father and all four grandparents are buried.

In lieu of flowers, please remember John’s fondness for all animals, especially cats, with a donation in his name to HART – Houston Animal Rescue Team (https://www.hartrescue.com/).
