The morning of Gene's passing, still in shock, and just minutes after hearing about it, Paul (my husband) turned on music on his phone. I had to smile through the tears remembering how, when we were kids, and Gene, newly returned from the navy, would put records on the stereo while we got ready for work and/or school. Often it was Elvis, sometimes Dean Martin (who he took great pride in resembling), at one point, it was a silly surfing song he played over and over ("fun, fun, fun, fun in the sun-"--?) But always there was music. I remember we had duplicates of many 45's because Mama would buy one to keep, and one to send him on the ship. Music, and laughter...Gene found humor in almost everything--and could always make you laugh. He loved to be silly. It was routine when Nicky and I had long curls down our backs to ask us, "You letting your hair grow?" Just silly...anything for a smile. He called every birthday--all of us, I'm sure, often calling on my birthday and saying, " is today Carolyn's birthday," or doing the same to her--Nicky and Barbie, too I'm sure. Then laugh and say happy birthday. I will miss those calls so much, and his sweet voice.
He was a wonderful brother. I thank Mama and Daddy for giving us all to each other, and hope he's joyous with them in Heaven now.

The world has lost a very special person. Uncle Gene was an amazing, loving, caring and a joyous person to be around. We are going to miss sitting around the table telling & listening to his amazing stories, jokes, laughing, eating Luby's and those awesome bear hugs that seemed like hours before we could pull away. I'm missing the Gene hugs right now. We will never forget when Uncle Gene came down to San Antonio to celebrate Brian and Kims surprise birthday party. I remember when the Poi dancers taught us how to hula but with the Hawaiian attire including the coconut shells. Uncle Gene didn't hesitate one bit. He put the coconuts and hula skirt on and started dancing. He was always up to something silly and always smiling. We are truly missing those bear hugs right about now. Love you so much Uncle Gene, we will love and forever carry you in our hearts.

Our brother Gene was always silly from playing football with us when we were little, he'd barely run as I recall he'd trot, and we could never catch him, we'd start laughing so hard. He always perked up if we referred to him as Deano and gave the look! He loved wiggling like Elvis but in a slow-mo wiggle. I loved the fact that my first-born Jason, born on his birthday. I am so sorry for his family and for all our family, he was loved and will be missed.
