My Pops was my rock. He loved me unconditionally and taught me how to love others the same way. Pops loved to make jokes and never took anything too seriously (pic 9 for proof). I get my sweet tooth from him and his love of all people. Pops always knew what to say to cheer me up and he made me feel like the most special girl in the world. He was a man of God and I hope to live by his faithful example. Pops is up in heaven getting to drink all the Dr. Pepper and eat all the Blue Bell vanilla ice cream he wants and I am so happy for him because I know how excited he was to get there and be with God in all His glory. Pops was the definition of a Family Man and taught me the importance of family. He and Nana started our crazy kooky Ellis fam and I wouldn’t have us any other way, where aunts and uncles are like mothers and fathers and cousins are like brothers and sisters. Pops was the example for us all. I can only hope that I will one day be able to leave a legacy that is even half of the one he has left. Pops put everyone before himself and I am extremely thankful that I got to have him in my life. I will miss him so much and will never forget the way he made me feel, forever loved. I love you Pops <3

It’s hard to imagine a world without Pops. He was the most kind, caring, loving and hilarious person. He always had candy in his pockets for his grandkids. He was known for his voicemails. A Pops voicemail was the best kind. He never met a stranger and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He loved talking to people and learning about their lives. He was always teaching me something new or helping me to look at a situation from a different perspective. In my 8th grade religion class, I was asked to pick a person I thought I could prove to be a saint, and I wrote about Pops. My college essay prompt was to write about a person whose had a significant impact on my life, and I wrote about Pops. He was always there for me, and he never let me doubt how loved I was. He believed in me, and believed I could get through anything. I wrote him the letter in the last picture 16 years ago on his 75th birthday, and it still holds true today. He was one of my biggest role models, and while I will miss him every day, I smile when I think about the incredible legacy he leaves behind. 91 years of life, almost 66 years of marriage, 6 kids, 16 grandkids, and soon to be 4 great grandkids. The ultimate family man. I love you so much Pops, and I know you will continue to look out for me for the rest of my life, just as you always have.

JJ hired me, Jules Laird, and James Handy, as the first probation officers under him in the misdemeanor division. Joe told me to cut my hair and mustache before I was interviewed by the hiring committee. He told me on Thursday that he would call me in 2 weeks. That night he called and asked if I would come to work tomorrow . I had wanted a vacation, but it was JJ and I said sure. Later he told me the committee had rejected me but he wanted me and he got his way. Joe also covered for me when I told him I wanted to go to law school at South Texas. He knew they would fire me, so I went with Joe’s blessings and have been a criminal defense attorney for 45 years. My love to Lea and all the kids. He was a great man and good friend. God is with him for certain.
