Obituary of Newton B. Schwartz, Sr.

Newton Boris Schwartz, Sr., born May 1, 1930 to Annie and Nathan Schwartz, passed away on October 11, 2022 in Houston, Texas at 92 years of age. Newton's parents both immigrated to the United States from Russia and Romania at the beginning of the twentieth century.

He was preceded in death by his three older brothers: Charles, Seymour, and Leo Schwartz.

Newton graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston and The University of Texas at Austin as well as U.T. Law School. He worked his way through school serving meals in the women's dormitory and tutoring members of the U.T. football team. He then served in the U.S. Air Force as a Judge Advocate.

After his military service, Newton worked as a trial lawyer in Houston for 65 years and spent much of his career practicing environmental law, toxic tort and medical malpractice. He was involved in a class action lawsuit against the chemical companies that made Agent Orange which provided restitution for veterans and their families. He retired at age 90. It is an understatement to say he enjoyed his work.

Outside of law, Newton made exercise a daily habit. Playing tennis, walking the dogs and swimming kept him healthy and calmed his busy mind. He was also a lifelong classical music fan, which he listened to exclusively on well-worn headphones.

Newton's wife of 56 years, Annita Fite Schwartz, passed away just three months ago.

He is survived by his children: Emily Schwartz Kemper, Newton Boris Schwartz, Jr., and Kathryn Schwartz Queen. He is also survived by son-in-law, Gunther Kemper, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Schwartz, and son-in-law, Ben Queen; as well as five grandchildren: Fronia Kathryn Kemper, Alexander Vayakhel Kemper, Maxwell Newton Queen, Owen Samuel Queen and Nora Emily Queen.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at the Beth Yeshurun Allen Parkway Cemetery, 3502 Allen Parkway in Houston, Texas.
