Obituary of John Phillip McGonigle

John Philip “Phil” McGonigle, born July 19, 1934 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Gertrude and John McGonigle passed away peacefully on April 11, 2023 in Austin, Texas.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Harriet McGonigle, and sons Tim of Arlington, Virginia and Patrick of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Claire McGonigle and Molly McGonigle.

Phil grew up in Vicksburg, MS and Wichita, KS.  After graduating from Wichita State University, he started working for the Rock Island Railroad in 1956 and transferred from Wichita to Houston in February 1960.  During this time, his love of travel blossomed as he travelled by train all over the U.S. and Canada.  In 1966, Phil met Harriet Bonnet and they married on December 10, 1967. After a career in the transportation industry, Phil embarked on a second career in the travel industry, where he specialized in Irish tourism. They were able to take advantage of many opportunities to travel in the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, and Central America. In addition to his lifelong love of travel, Phil was an avid runner and tennis player who could often be seen in Memorial Park. 

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on  Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Memorial Park, 6622 Haskell Street in Houston, TX.
