Obituary of Gerardo Mabunay Gustilo
Dr. Gerardo M. Gustilo, 74, of Houston, Texas and Iloilo City, Philippines died on Monday, July 8 surrounded by his wife and children. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.
Born in Iloilo City, Philippines, in 1950 to Drs. Juan B. Gustilo and Eva M. Gustilo, Gerry loved Iloilo and the Philippines and would regale his children with stories of a happy childhood exploring what was then a small town and its verdant countryside. After graduating from San Augustin Elementary School and the University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo City, Gerry attended Ateneo University in Manila, where he formed many lifelong friendships. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of San Agustin in Iloilo, he earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, after which he completed his residency in Pathology. While in medical school, Gerry was a consummate entrepreneur and formed various medical business ventures, including a concierge medicine service.
He met his wife, Yolanda, through one of his friends from Ateneo. When they were first acquainted, Gerry simply thought of “Yoly” as his close friend’s younger sister. However, while finishing his medical school studies, a chance visit to his friend’s home revealed that the young girl had grown into a beautiful woman. They were married in 1976.
He and Yoly moved to the United States, where they raised their four children. A much-beloved father, he sought to teach his children civic responsibility and to care for others. He was a dedicated son and took care of his mother for the last 14 years of her life, which he felt was one of his life’s greatest honors.
Gerardo was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Juan B. Gustilo and Dra. Eva M. Gustilo. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Yolanda, and their children Gia (husband Terence), Gerard, John, and Albert, and his grandson Benjamin, several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends.
