Richard was a true inspiration to all who knew him. He touched our lives in so many positive ways when we were neighbors in Spokane. Our children still talk about the influence he had on their lives. We remember and treasure his friendship fondly. Richard, thank you for your service to our country and, as we say in the US Air Force,Godspeed. Peggy, Josh, Brandon, Kristen. and families, you have our sympathies.

I have always felt blessed to have you and Richard as part of Leo & my family over the later years we’ve not seen much of each other very much but when we were young we used to have so much fun with the Smith/ Kiefer group Richard could put a smile on anyone’s face I can remember watching Aunt Pauline laughing so hard at him along with the rest of us. Richard was a very nice man he was nice to everyone and treated everyone fair you don’t find a lot of people that do that anymore. You the kids and grandkids are all in our hearts prayers are being said for all of you as you go through this very hard time in your life. Love you and will see you soon.
Love Margie

Peggy my heart breaks for you and your family. You could see the love you two shared in all of your pictures and sweet posts from your many trips. Although I did not know Richard well, I remember him sticking his head in to say hello during Pokeeno at your house, and feeling his kind spirit. I will keep you all in my prayers, asking for comfort and strength during this very difficult time.
Love you.

Dear Jerry, Peggy, Joshua, Brandon, Kristin, and all the grandchildren,
I am so sorry for your loss. For those of you who don't know me, I am Richard's mom's (Aunt Virginia to me) sister's (Aunt Ezzie to Richard, Steven and Jerry, Grammie to me) daughter's (Judy) oldest daughter! Jerry, you, Richard and Steven were the best cousins ever! You were always funny. I loved the game where we would steal each other's shoes and socks and stuff the socks with newspaper, put them back in the shoes and then hide them somewhere. Grammy would always get out the great big iced tea glasses and the long thin iced tea spoons for the sugar when you three came to visit. Seems like you always came to visit all together. And there was always the question at each meal of who would get the rocky plate or the hole-y bowl this time. And you helped me learn to read! Many good memories. You had a wonderful brother/husband/father/grandfather. I am thankful to have known Richard and his brothers when I was a child. Just yesterday I played Stefen's six ft. six poem about Steve for my son, Bodin. They were a powerful trio, these three. Jerry - I am so sorry. Peggy - I am so sorry. To each one of you, I am so sorry. I hold you all in my heart right now. I am thankful he had each of you in his life. I know you meant the world to him. I wish I weren't writing this. I like to think of him now with Steve and Aunt Virginia and Uncle Mike, Grammie and Grampie Jim, Momee and David and Nanny and members of other parts of his family I didn't know. Gosh, so many. I am sure he received a big warm tearful reception! Please know that all the way over here in Eugene, OR Richard is loved and missed.
With love, Jennie

The family has my deepest condolences. It’s been many years since I talk to Richard but he was often in my thoughts. I met him after he returned from military service and I knew he and Peggy when they married. Richard and I often had conversations about all conceivable topics. I considered him a friend and will miss the sense of his presence in the world I live. Sorry, Jerry, I know you will miss him.
