Obituary of Kurt Roger Fredland

Please share a memory of Kurt to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Kurt Roger Fredland, 76, of Houston, TX, passed away at his lake house on Lake Livingston on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Born on September 19, 1948, to Dr. Roger and Dorothy Fredland, formerly of Siasconset, MA, and Annapolis, MD, Kurt was the middle child among five brothers.

Kurt graduated from Annapolis High School in 1966 and attended Princeton University on a Navy ROTC scholarship, earning a degree in Economics and graduating with the class of 1970. Following his graduation, he was commissioned as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer, serving with distinction in multiple commands across the Pacific theater.

While stationed in San Diego, CA, Kurt met the love of his life, the former Nina Marie Sciortino of Staten Island, NY. They married on October 7, 1973, embarking on a 51-year marriage. After completing his naval service, Kurt pursued further education, earning a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1976.

Kurt and Nina moved to Houston, TX, in late 1976, where he began a successful 40+ year career in the financial industry, working for First City Texas Bank and Western National. Together, they raised three children and were blessed with 13 grandchildren.

Kurt retired from the financial industry in 2015, splitting his time between homes in Houston, Nantucket, and Lake Livingston. He devoted his retirement to supporting his wife in her career, enjoying “Papa” time with his grandchildren, and admiring sunsets across the lake.

Kurt was a family man who loved and cherished his wife and was always there for his children through various sports and school events. He appreciated many different genres of music, from Mozart to Leonard Cohen, and could be heard loudly singing in the pew on Sundays. He was a long-time blood donor, taking pride in having donated over 15 gallons throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Kurt is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Nina Fredland; his children, Mari, Nick, and Jon; his brothers, Eric, Robert, and Mark; and his 13 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating blood to a local blood center: https://www.giveblood.org/donate/find-a-location/ or monetary donations to support “Blood Services” at the American Red Cross: https://www.redcross.org/donate/blood-services-donation.html/
